PRIVATE TOUR

MAYAN RUINS OF EK BALAM

Located just north of Valladolid, Ek Balam (translates to “black jaguar”) is a beautiful archeological site relatively unknown among tourists, meaning you’ll enjoy a truly intimate tour.

After being abandoned by the Mayans, Ek Balam became hidden beneath the dense low-lying jungle. As with all of the Mayan pyramids, these ruins were discovered when archaeologists noticed a group of hills with trees and bushes growing out of them. Carefully excavating the mounds, they uncovered buildings and artifacts which had remained hidden for hundreds of years.

After visiting the archeological site, your expedition will continue towards Valladolid, a small, quaint town that has preserved its special colonial flavor. If you’re looking to bring home a local keepsake, Valladolid’s plaza is the place to go. On one side of the plaza, Mayan women display and sell their handicrafts, which include hand-embroidered dresses and blouses, placemats, and tablecloths.
